Zero energy building

The building is carefully inserted into the sloped landscape, creating a direct access to outside for each floor.  Whilst the courtyard area of the school is redefined southwards, a widening is created toward the north that simultaneously becomes a meeting place for the hamlet of Novale.  The building reinterprets the typical character of the Alps in a contemporary way, with the basement walls of stone and the ground floor protruding along the perimeter.  The same vision guided the choice of materials: quartz filite from Laion for the basement, oak doors and windows and plastered brick walls for the upper floor.
The overall shape appears decidedly compact in order to guarantee an optimal energy balance in terms of heat loss.  The building meets the stringent criteria of the category KlimaHausGold+ which requires an energy index of less than 10 kWh/m²a and the use of ecological materials and renewable energy sources.  It was the first passive energy school in Italy and is one of the few in Europe.
The building was awarded Best KlimaHaus/CasaClima in the category Energy Plus in 2006.
